“What I learned at Belews, I could apply to smallmouth fishing in tournaments up north on lakes like Champlain.”įor those unfamiliar with drop-shot fishing, the technique is attributed to saltwater fishermen, who have used a variation of the basic rig for years. I also needed to fine tune my search skills with my electronics. I had tried drop-shotting a little, but I wanted to experiment with knots, lines and baits. “I heard that Belews was a clear, deep-water lake with depths over 100 feet in places, just the conditions I wanted. “It was a place for me to practice drop-shotting in winter,” said Grein. The “hot hole” has made Belews one of the state’s more productive winter lakes for bass.įun and fish aside, Grein had another idea that drove him to spend time on Belews. The plant’s super-hot discharge creates a winter sauna for bass, fooling the fish into acting and biting like it’s spring. The Belews Creek Steam Station was a big reason behind the outing. “That trip took place years ago, and we went fishing just for fun.” “Rodney Sorrel of Stokesdale, a buddy of mine, asked me to go fishing with him at Belews Lake in December,” Grein said. So how did Grein, an avid tournament fisherman, come to fish Belews Lake? Its 3,864 acres and 88 miles of undeveloped shoreline northeast of Winston-Salem and northwest of Greensboro are mostly fished by local bass clubs and area anglers. Conversely, Belews Lake’s small size and limited facilities render it unsuitable for most major tournaments. She said “duly noted,” which means that what he said didn’t warrant any attention. Krabappel was acknowledging the immaculate condition of Bart’s textbooks but she wasn’t giving him a commendation for it. To dig even deeper into the nuances of this phrase, check out this video:ĭo you think it is rude to use sarcasm? If you use duly noted irreverently, some people may think it’s rude. Watch this video – “What does Duly Noted mean?” It’s a contribution duly noted by head coach Shawn Olmstead, who gets a bit emotional when talking about the contributions made by his less-heralded group of seniors. But sometimes the meaning of duly noted is “to notice something” or “to call attention to it.” For example, this quote from Deseret News mentions a coach observing the positive outlook of one particular player: People mostly use “duly noted” as a simple acknowledgment of opinion. “The objection was duly noted and we began,” Ming-Mendoza said. objected to reviewing all the signatures in the petition, protested that county clerk employees are not handwriting experts and said none of the employees should be involved because they are members of the AFSCME union. Here’s an example of “duly noted” in this sentence found in an article written about a county tax petition: Krabappel didn’t deliberately write down Bart’s silly observation. In fact, this usage can only be construed as a fragmentary comment (perhaps written in the margin?), not as either a sentence or a part of a sentence. But the clause cannot be employed as an adjectival past participle modifying some other sentence consituent, because such a constituent has to be the object of the non-finite verb, and you have already supplied that object: that we have previously discussed this. This can only be treated as some sort of subordinate clause. If noted is a non-finite past participle there is neither a subject nor the finite verb which a sentence requires. If noted is a finite verb, the sentence is missing its subject- who observed that we have already discussed this? In both cases, the sentence is defective: Noted may be understood as either a finite past-tense form or a non-finite past participle. Noted that we have previously discussed this. Oboler expanded on his values on moving to film, with his directorial debut Strange Holiday (1945) telling the story of an unsuspecting small US town falling to foreign tyranny. Amid the spooks and chills of Lights Out, Oboler would slip in an episode establishing the virtues of democracy over fascism or communism, and the apparent ease through which agents could infiltrate American defenses. One man angry at this state of affairs was the latter-day writer and producer of Lights Out, Arch Oboler.Ī vehement anti-fascist, Oboler often used his radio dramas as benevolent propaganda for the American way of life. Radio became home to music and chat, with the soaps, dramas and thrillers left to the ‘picture box’. As with many other radio shows of the time, Lights Out emigrated to television, running for three years on NBC from 1949. Around 1950, an evening’s radio schedule looked much like a TV schedule, a mix of comedy, drama, light entertainment, and suspense shows like Lights Out, a kind of gorier audio Twilight Zone that ran on and off on both NBS and CBS’s radio networks between 19. From a 1930s scientific novelty, television developed into the ascendant medium, having already overhauled radio, changing it forever. One early exception came with Murder By Television (1935), a stultifying and stagy whodunnit starring Bela Lugosi, wherein the inventor of a new process allowing TV pictures to be beamed around the world is murdered by the villain making a phone call in the next room, the combined waves creating a death ray, which apparently is a thing that can happen. For the most part, Hollywood dealt with television by feigning ignorance of its existence. The early 1950s were a transitional time in the relationship between television and film.
